Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute is committed to providing patients with convenient access to high-quality care. We continue to strive to be a leader in innovative medical practices and are one of the first clinics in the area to offer online health services to our patients.

History

Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute is based in Charlotte County, Florida and was founded in 1999 by Dr. Mario Lopez, Dr. Terence Connelly, Dr. Sergio Cossu, and Dr. Agustin Collado.

The cardiologists of Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute have a combined total of over 70 years experience practicing cardiac medicine in Charlotte County. The physicians concentrate on the early detection of cardiovascular diseases so that the many conditions related to these ailments may be prevented. Our well-trained and dedicated cardiologists and staff perform management and follow-up of these conditions, once detected.

The Institute is involved in many national and international research studies. Our dedicated and professionally staffed research department is involved in cutting edge technology and pharmaceuticals.

Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute also provides diagnostic testing in our state-of-the-art O/P cardiac catheterization lab.

Physicians

 Mario Lopez, M.D. FACC

Dr. Lopez has a consultative, interventional cardiology practice with an emphasis in coronary intervention, including cardiac catheterization, stent deployment, coronary angioplasty and peripheral vascular diagnosis and intervention. Dr. Lopez is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, is Nuclear Certified, is a principal investigator in national and international research studies, serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute and is a founding member of the practice.

 Terence Connelly, M.D. FACC

Dr. Connelly has a consultative, interventional cardiology practice with an emphasis in coronary and peripheral vascular intervention, including cardiac catheterization, stent deployment and cardiac angioplasty. Dr. Connelly is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, is a principal investigator in national and international research studies, is Chairman of the Charlotte County Institutional Review Board, serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute and is a founding member of the practice.

 Sergio Cossu, M.D. FACC

Dr. Cossu's speciality of Electrophysiology involves the diagnosis and management of abnormal heart rhythms and the implantation and follow-up of pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators. Dr. Cossu is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a principal research investigator in several national and international research trials, has authored many journal publications and chapters in major medical textbooks, is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society, serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute, and is a founding member of the practice.

 Ricardo Martinez, M.D. FACC

Dr. Martinez's practice concentrates on consultative interventional cardiology and nuclear diagnostics of the heart and vascular system with an emphasis in coronary and peripheral vascular intervention, including cardiac catheterization, stent deployment, cardiac and peripheral angioplasty, and permanent pacemaker implantation. Dr. Martinez is involved in national and international research trials and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, as well as being certified in Nuclear Cardiology. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute.

 Michael Malone, D.O.

Dr. Malone's practice concentrates on consultative cardiology with emphasis on primary prevention and heart failure. Dr. Malone performs diagnostic cardiac catheterization, pacemaker/ICD implantation and transesophageal echocardiography and is certified with the International Board of Heart Examiners and is Nuclear Certified. Dr. Malone in involved in national and international research trials and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute.

 David Hotchkiss, M.D.

Dr. Hotchkiss is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology. He practices consultative, interventional, and nuclear cardiology with an emphasis on coronary and peripheral vascular intervention, including cardiac catheterization, stent deployment, cardiac and peripheral angioplasty, and permanent pacemaker, as well as ICD implantation. Dr. Hotchkiss is a principal investigator in several national and international research trials, served as Chief of Medicine for Fawcett Memorial Hospital from January 2009 thru December 2010, and joined Charlotte Heart & Vascular Institute in January 2012.

J. Robert Kuhns, M.D.

Dr. Kuhns is certified in Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His previous positions include Director of Echocardiography, Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology, Chairman of Heart Center of West Central Ohio, as well as chairing Coronary Care committees and Emergency Services. Dr. Kuhns has over 30 years experience in clinical cardiology, including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Kuhns has a consultative practice which emphasizes prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
